Rylands vs Chorley - FA Cup

Few would have predicted the narrative arc that brings Rylands and Chorley together at the home ground on September 19, 2026, and the underdog storyline only adds to the FA Cup occasion. Anderson was pointing out that City had held the whip hand in this fixture "for as long as I've known", which isn't exactly inaccurate but will also fan the flames ahead of Sunday's Old Trafford showdown.

The two sides arrive with plenty to prove, and the FA Cup contest at the home ground offers a chance to lay down a marker. The hosts will be looking to find their rhythm and put a run of results together. The visitors will back themselves to cause problems and will not make the trip expecting an easy afternoon. That was the 3-2 loss to Manchester United in January of this year, which ended a 121-match run without letting in three goals.

Pressing intensity will define the contest. Rylands will seek to win the ball high up the pitch and suffocate Chorley's build-up, while the visitors will aim to play through the pressure and exploit the spaces it leaves behind. Andoni Iraola could not have been clearer about how he plans to change Liverpool when speaking in his opening press conference.

Game-changers are scattered across both line-ups, and the contest may well be decided by which side's match-winners deliver on the day. Set-piece specialists and aerial threats on both sides mean dead-ball situations could carry outsized importance. Arsenal have already seen one offer rejected and are expected to return with an improved proposal, while Villa continue trying to secure the England defender on a new contract.

Predicting an outright winner is no easy task given how little separates the two sides on paper. A share of the spoils looks the most probable outcome, with neither side holding a decisive edge — a 1-1 draw feels like a fitting result. The result at the home ground could resonate well beyond matchday in the FA Cup picture. Harry Kane is the favourite to win the Ballon d’Or.
