Ilioupoli vs Asteras Varis - Gamma Ethniki - Group 9

The history between Ilioupoli and Asteras Varis lends this Gamma Ethniki - Group 9 fixture an extra layer of spice, and when the two walk out at the home ground on October 4, 2026, recent encounters will be on everyone's mind. It has not been a daunting fixture list but there are signs that Mourinho has found a way to get the best from an increasingly stacked Madrid squad.

Form and standings can only tell part of the story when Ilioupoli and Asteras Varis cross paths in the Gamma Ethniki - Group 9, and pride alone should guarantee a contest. Ilioupoli will be keen to seize the initiative and build some momentum on home soil. Asteras Varis will travel with intent, knowing that a positive result here could kick-start their campaign. Dusan Vlahovic followed up his hat-trick on Monday by completing the comeback to leave Fenerbahce four points behind Galatasaray, who snatched a late winner at Basaksehir on Friday.

Wing play is likely to be central to the contest. Ilioupoli will look to stretch the pitch and isolate their wide attackers, while Asteras Varis must find a way to compress the space and choke the supply lines. The 29-year-old ranked 4th in strokes gained approach in 2026, and he has finished outside the top four in that specific category only once in the seven full seasons he has played on the PGA Tour.

Game-changers are scattered across both line-ups, and the contest may well be decided by which side's match-winners deliver on the day. The wide areas will be a key battleground, with full-backs and wingers on either side capable of swinging the contest one way or the other. City are seeking upwards of £60m for the 30-year-old midfielder, who has entered the final year of his deal.

With the sides closely matched, the outcome may well hinge on which team takes its chances on the day. With the sides so closely matched, a 1-1 stalemate looks the most likely way this one ends. With the standings tight and form on the line, this is a fixture neither side will want to lose. And Fonseca does not place too much weight on the decision of Roberto Martinez to omit him from the World Cup squad in favour of his Benfica team-mate Tomas Araujo.
