Formartine United vs Deveronvale - Football League - Highland League

Few would have predicted the narrative arc that brings Formartine United and Deveronvale together at the home ground on October 7, 2026, and the underdog storyline only adds to the Football League - Highland League occasion. Altrincham vs Manchester United U21s highlights and reaction from pre-season fixture.

There is little to choose between Formartine United and Deveronvale on paper, and the Football League - Highland League encounter should reflect that balance. Formartine United will be keen to seize the initiative and build some momentum on home soil. The visitors will back themselves to cause problems and will not make the trip expecting an easy afternoon. During his 22 matches in charge, Oxford actually ranked as high as 14th in the table.

The tactical subplot is compelling: Formartine United favour a possession-based game built on patience and control, while Deveronvale are happiest sitting deep and exploding forward on the counter — a classic contrast of philosophies. It meant City had a three-man defence of Josko Gvardiol, Abdukodir Khusanov and Ruben Dias when in possession.

Individual moments of quality could tip the balance. Both sides possess players capable of producing something out of nothing, and a single flash of brilliance may be all that separates them. How each side deals with the other's danger men — and who takes their chances when they come — will be central to the outcome. They plan to open talks with PSG forward Bradley Barcola, but it will be a difficult deal to do with the French and European champions valuing him at around £145m.

Predicting an outright winner is no easy task given how little separates the two sides on paper. The signals point towards a stalemate, with the two sides closely matched across form and standings. A 1-1 draw is easy to envisage. With the standings tight and form on the line, this is a fixture neither side will want to lose. And Fonseca does not place too much weight on the decision of Roberto Martinez to omit him from the World Cup squad in favour of his Benfica team-mate Tomas Araujo.
