Basel II vs SC Kriens - 1. Liga Promotion

Tactical intrigue takes centre stage on May 9, 2026 as Basel II and SC Kriens prepare to square off at Leichtathletik-Stadion St. Jakob, with both managers known for their strategic nuance in the 1. Liga Promotion. Josh Allen had an impressive first game at the Buffalo Bills’ new stadium in their second NFL fixture of the season.

The two sides arrive with plenty to prove, and the 1. Liga Promotion contest at Leichtathletik-Stadion St. Jakob offers a chance to lay down a marker. The hosts have been steady if unspectacular, LWWLW in their last five reflecting a win rate of 42.86%. SC Kriens will travel with intent, knowing that a positive result here could kick-start their campaign. That result ended the European giants' 14-game unbeaten run in the competition, as Fede Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham were contained by an "incredible" performance from a player barely anyone outside of France had heard of.

The touchline duel between the two managers adds another layer of intrigue, with both likely to tweak their setups in search of a decisive edge. But it was a dual role for Rayo because he was also among the top dozen players for blocking crosses and winning possession in the defensive third.

Game-changers are scattered across both line-ups, and the contest may well be decided by which side's match-winners deliver on the day. Set-piece specialists and aerial threats on both sides mean dead-ball situations could carry outsized importance. The Roma midfielder has been identified as someone who could be the elusive third midfield signing this summer.

The market has yet to form a strong view, and the contest looks genuinely difficult to call. With the sides so closely matched, a 2-2 stalemate looks the most likely way this one ends. With positions in the 1. Liga Promotion table to defend and momentum to chase, neither side can afford to leave anything in the tank. The club are understood to favour a profile closer to Aurelien Tchouameni or a Premier League‑proven alternative rather than Manu Kone.
