Aerostar Bacau vs Viitorul Onesti - Cupa României

Season-defining implications hang over this Cupa României clash at the home ground, where Aerostar Bacau host Viitorul Onesti on August 5, 2026 knowing the result could shape the run-in for both clubs. The 74-year-old Hoops boss admitted that "it'll be a bit strange not having the (Celtic) fans in but I'm nervously and excitedly looking forward to it; it's a great fixture" and also spoke about the police visit.

There is little to choose between Aerostar Bacau and Viitorul Onesti on paper, and the Cupa României encounter should reflect that balance. Aerostar Bacau's recent form is difficult to quantify, but the occasion itself should bring the best out of them. The visitors will back themselves to cause problems and will not make the trip expecting an easy afternoon. Despite his age, and recent injury record, Rodri remains the most complete central midfielder to have operated in the Premier League over the past five years.

How the two sides approach the contest strategically will be key. Aerostar Bacau will want to control proceedings in front of their own supporters, while Viitorul Onesti will back themselves to cause problems on the break. With Andrei Trandafir leading the league's scoring charts at 2 goals, the contest is unlikely to be short of attacking intent. Whoever wins the individual duel between the two sides' chief playmakers is likely to dictate the rhythm and, ultimately, the destination of the points. But this only highlights the gulf between Van Hecke and every other defender in the Premier League even more.

With the sides closely matched, the outcome may well hinge on which team takes its chances on the day. The signals point towards a stalemate, with the two sides closely matched across form and standings. A 1-1 draw is easy to envisage. The result at the home ground could resonate well beyond matchday in the Cupa României picture. The Spaniard heading to Barca all but rules out a midfield departure from the Bernabeu and thus United will likely have to look elsewhere.
