AEL vs Pafos - Cup

A fascinating Cup chapter awaits on April 8, 2026 when AEL take on Pafos at Alphamega Stadium — two sides with plenty to play for and everything to prove. Enzo Maresca and Rico Lewis held a pre-match press conference on Saturday as Manchester City prepare to face Atletico Madrid in their third pre-season friendly of the summer.

There is plenty riding on this Cup encounter for AEL and Pafos alike, and neither will want to leave Alphamega Stadium empty-handed. AEL will be keen to seize the initiative and build some momentum on home soil. Pafos will travel with intent, knowing that a positive result here could kick-start their campaign. Man Utd have still accumulated the most points across the league since his return in January.

The tactical battle could prove decisive. AEL may lean on their home advantage to dictate the tempo, but Pafos have shown they can be dangerous when allowed to play on their own terms. And there are still question marks even in attack, where they have an abundance of supporting forwards including Mbeumo, Cunha and Amad Diallo, but only one out-and-out striker in Sesko.

In fixtures as finely poised as this one, it often comes down to who holds their nerve in the big moments — and both camps have players who relish that responsibility. The wide areas will be a key battleground, with full-backs and wingers on either side capable of swinging the contest one way or the other. Newcastle United have stepped up their search for an experienced midfielder by opening discussions with Manchester City over a possible deal for Nico Gonzalez.

With the sides closely matched, the outcome may well hinge on which team takes its chances on the day. With the sides so closely matched, a 1-1 stalemate looks the most likely way this one ends. The result at Alphamega Stadium could resonate well beyond matchday in the Cup picture. And Fonseca does not place too much weight on the decision of Roberto Martinez to omit him from the World Cup squad in favour of his Benfica team-mate Tomas Araujo.
